Since the foundation of the winery, Santiago Garde has been working on the project of Tuercebotas 100% Garnacha. Garnacha used to be the signature grape of Rioja but, because the clones used were very productive, they lost the public’s recognition as a quality variety. For this reason, Santiago decided to plant plots with old clones of Rioja Garnacha with a much lower production. Tuercebotas Garnacha is made from very old vines of between 40-100 years. The grandfathers of Medievo’s winegrowers had carried out a selection of pre-phyloxera Garnachas that they grafted onto Rupestris de Lot, the first rootstock to be used after the eruption of phyloxera. These vineyards have been transmitted from one generation to the next and are today testimony to an ancestral viticulture.
Aged 12 months in fine new French oak barrels, it has a deep cherry colour, with ripe red and black fruit, floral violet, spice aromas. Balanced in sweetness and acidity, unctuous and rich palate, with a soft tannic component, velvety and generous finish. Total production 10,000 bottles.
